How to Use the Elden Ring Build Planner

This tool is your sandbox for creating and perfecting any build you can imagine. Here’s how to get started:

  • 1. Choose Your Starting Class: Select your origin from the dropdown. This choice is crucial as it determines your starting stats and level, making some classes more efficient for reaching certain endgame builds.

  • 2. Set Your Target Level: Input the Rune Level you want to plan for. Common targets are 125 and 150 for the PvP and co-op “meta,” but you can plan for any level.

  • 3. Allocate Your Attributes: Use the sliders or input boxes to distribute points into your eight core attributes (Vigor, Mind, Endurance, etc.). The planner will automatically track your total level.

  • 4. Equip Your Gear: Select your desired weapons, armor, and talismans from the lists. This will allow you to see your real-time Attack Rating (AR), Equip Load, and Poise.

  • 5. Review the Summary: The results panel will show you a complete overview of your planned character, including your HP, FP, Stamina, damage numbers, and defensive stats, so you can see the direct impact of every decision.

Understanding Your Build: A Guide to Attributes & Soft Caps

Your build is more than just a pile of stats; it’s a synergistic system. Understanding what each attribute does—and when to stop leveling it—is the most important knowledge a player can have.

Core Attributes Explained

Each point you invest has a specific purpose. Here is a breakdown of what each of the eight core attributes governs.

Attribute Primary Function Secondary Functions & Notes
Vigor Increases Health (HP). Also boosts Fire resistance and Immunity. The single most important stat for survival.
Mind Increases Focus Points (FP). Also boosts Focus resistance. Essential for spellcasters and players who use weapon arts frequently.
Endurance Increases Stamina and Equip Load. Also boosts Robustness. Allows you to wear heavier armor, attack more, and dodge more often.
Strength Meets requirements for heavy weapons and increases their damage. Boosts physical defense. The primary damage stat for most heavy, blunt, and colossal weapons.
Dexterity Meets requirements for agile weapons and increases their damage. Reduces spell casting time (from 40-70 DEX), reduces fall damage, and makes it harder to be knocked off your horse.
Intelligence Meets requirements for Glintstone sorceries and increases their power. The primary damage stat for magic-infused weapons. Boosts magic resistance.
Faith Meets requirements for Incantations and increases their power. The primary damage stat for holy and fire-infused weapons.
Arcane Increases discovery (item drop rate) and Holy defense. Required for some sorceries/incantations. The primary scaling stat for Bleed and Occult infusions.

The Most Important Concept: Stat “Soft Caps”

A soft cap is the point where you start getting diminishing returns for investing in a stat. Leveling a stat beyond its final soft cap is usually a waste of runes that could be better spent elsewhere. Planning your build around these caps is the key to optimization.

Stat Primary Soft Caps Final Soft Cap Notes & Recommendation
Vigor (HP) 40 60 You get huge HP gains up to 40 Vigor. The gains are still excellent up to 60. Never level Vigor past 60.
Mind (FP) 50 60 You get strong FP gains up to 50 Mind, with the final soft cap at 60. Most builds won’t need more than 30-40.
Endurance (Stamina) 30 50 Stamina gains slow down after 30 and cap at 50. Level Endurance primarily for the Equip Load you need.
STR / DEX / ARC (Weapon Damage) 20 / 55 80 For weapon scaling, you see good returns up to 20, great returns up to 55, and decent returns up to 80.
INT / FTH (Spell/Incant Damage) 60 80 For spellcasters, the primary damage soft cap is much higher. Aim for 60 for good damage, and push towards 80 for a pure caster build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best starting class in Elden Ring?

The “best” class is the one that is most efficient for your target build, meaning it starts with the lowest possible values in the stats you don’t plan to use.

  • Vagabond: Excellent for quality (STR/DEX) or pure Strength builds.

  • Samurai: Fantastic for Dexterity and Bleed builds, starting with the powerful Uchigatana.

  • Astrologer: The premier choice for a pure Intelligence sorcery build.

  • Confessor: A great starting point for hybrid Faith builds.

  • Wretch: Starts at level 1 with 10 in every stat. While not the most efficient for a min-maxed build, it offers the most flexibility for players who are undecided.

How much Vigor should I level?

This is the most critical question for any build. For any endgame build (level 100+), you should aim for between 50 and 60 Vigor. The massive health increase prevents you from being one-shot by late-game bosses and other players. Under-investing in Vigor is the most common mistake new players make.

What is the “meta level” for PvP and co-op?

The community has generally settled on two primary level ranges for matchmaking in duels, invasions, and co-op:

  • RL 125 (Rune Level 125): This is a more focused meta where players must make meaningful choices about their stat allocation.

  • RL 150 (Rune Level 150): This is a more popular and forgiving meta that allows for more powerful hybrid builds without sacrificing Vigor. Our planner is perfect for theorycrafting builds for both metas.

What’s the difference between scaling on a weapon (S, A, B, C, D, E)?

Scaling determines how much bonus damage your weapon gets from your stats. ‘S’ is the best, and ‘E’ is the worst. When you use the planner to select a weapon, it will show you the weapon’s scaling grades and calculate the total Attack Rating (AR) based on your allocated stats.

Should I do a quality build (STR/DEX) or specialize?

In Elden Ring, specializing is almost always more effective. A “Quality” build, which levels Strength and Dexterity equally, is generally weaker than a “Heavy” (pure STR) or “Keen” (pure DEX) build until you reach very high levels. This is because weapon infusions that specialize in one stat provide better returns.

When should I start leveling Arcane?

Level Arcane if you plan to use a weapon with natural Bleed buildup (like Rivers of Blood or Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear) or if you want to use the Dragon Communion Seal for incantations. For Bleed builds, applying an Occult infusion to a weapon will make it scale excellently with your Arcane stat.

Is it worth leveling a stat beyond the final soft cap?

Almost never. For example, leveling Vigor from 60 to 61 gives you only a tiny handful of HP. That one level would be far more valuable if placed in Endurance for more Equip Load or a damage stat for more AR. The soft caps are your guide for when to stop.

How many stats should I focus on for my first playthrough?

For a first-time player, keep it simple.

  1. Level Vigor to a comfortable level first (aim for 40 by mid-game).

  2. Level Endurance enough to wear the armor you like without “fat rolling.”

  3. Pick one primary damage stat (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, or Faith) and focus on leveling it to its soft cap (55 or 60).

Can I plan a build for a specific weapon or spell?

Yes. That is a primary function of this tool. Look up the weapon or spell you want to use and note its attribute requirements (e.g., Moonveil requires 12 STR, 18 DEX, and 23 INT). Input those minimums into the planner first, then allocate the rest of your points to optimize its damage.
